Alert Issued Over Cattle Parasite in North America
A significant concern has arisen in North America regarding the resurgence of the screwworm fly, a devastating cattle parasite. Mexico has temporarily suspended live animal imports from the United States following the confirmation of five cases in southern U.S. states. This parasite, scientifically known as Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a parasitic fly that infests warm-blooded animals, including cattle and, in rare instances, humans. The female flies lay eggs in open wounds, and the larvae consume living tissue, causing severe damage and potentially death if untreated. The recent cases, including two in Texas and one in New Mexico affecting a dog, have heightened fears of its re-establishment after being largely eradicated in the 1960s. The Mexican government's import ban aims to protect its livestock, covering a wide range of animals intended for various purposes, with exceptions for pet dogs under enhanced veterinary checks.
The re-emergence of this destructive parasite poses a serious threat to the livestock industry and necessitates stringent biosecurity measures across North America.
