The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning that the Ebola outbreak in the northeast Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is expanding into new territories and is larger in scale than previously assessed. The WHO emphasizes that increased efforts are required to contain the virus, noting that current isolation bed capacity is significantly lower than anticipated given the transmission patterns. As of the latest WHO data, 676 confirmed Ebola cases, including 136 deaths, have been recorded since the outbreak was declared on May 15. There are also 119 suspected cases and 32 recoveries. The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus species, for which no approved vaccine or treatment exists, and it is concentrated in the Ituri province, with cases also appearing in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. The outbreak's geographical spread and case numbers are increasing, with new cases identified daily in new health zones within the affected regions, reflecting the high mobility of the population.
