Student Cries Still Echo from Collapse

Aizuddin,

Fifteen years after the tragic landslide at the Rumah Anak Yatim dan Anak Hidayah Madrasah At-Taqwa in Hulu Langat, photographer Aizuddin Saad revisited the site, still haunted by the cries of trapped students. He returned to document the current state of the madrasah using a drone. Aizuddin, who was among the first media personnel on the scene, recalled the harrowing rescue operations and the sight of students pinned by building debris. He described the initial impression from outside the building as deceptively normal, only to be shocked by the extent of the collapse upon entering. The rescue efforts by firefighters and villagers were already underway, with victims heard crying out in pain and bodies found piled together. Some survivors were trapped by unstable debris against structural elements. The overgrown vegetation and tall grass at the site now make further exploration daunting due to lingering trauma.

This personal account underscores the lasting psychological impact of traumatic events and the challenges faced by journalists covering disasters.
