Pabna Farmers Face Losses Despite Bumper Chili Harvest

Farmers in Pabna's Santhia Upazila are experiencing significant financial losses despite a bumper harvest of green chilies. The current market price of 15-16 Taka per kilogram is insufficient to cover even the labor costs of harvesting, which range from 10-12 Taka per kilogram. Additional expenses for transportation to market and back further exacerbate the situation, leaving farmers with no profit and covering only basic costs. This year, the region, known as the "vegetable bowl" of the country, saw a massive increase in chili production, leading to a surplus in the market and a sharp decline in prices. Farmers are compelled to harvest the chilies to prevent damage to the plants, even at a loss. Many families, including women and students, are participating in the harvest to cut costs. While the agricultural office reports favorable weather contributing to the high yield, the current market prices are a major concern for thousands of chili cultivators.

The situation highlights a critical issue in agricultural economics where increased production, instead of benefiting farmers, leads to financial distress due to falling market prices.
