Cheng Li-wun, the chairwoman of Taiwan's main opposition party, Kuomintang (KMT), expressed her hope to continue and deepen defense cooperation with the United States during her visit to Washington D.C. The KMT leader emphasized that seeking peaceful dialogue with China does not preclude maintaining Taiwan's defense capabilities. Cheng met with several members of Congress, academics, and other figures during her trip. Her visit comes amid ongoing discussions about US arms sales to Taiwan and the KMT's more engagement-oriented stance towards China, which contrasts with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. Cheng also highlighted that President Trump's recent remarks against Taiwan declaring independence align with the KMT's position.
This visit by a key Taiwanese opposition figure highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics and defense considerations between Taiwan, the US, and China.
