Tajikistan's Glaciers Threatened by Dust Storm Surge

Specialists are observing a dramatic increase in sand and dust storms in Tajikistan, posing a significant threat to the nation's glaciers. The number of such events has surged, with 63 dust storms and 216 dusty days recorded in 2025, a stark rise from previous years. Over the past decades, Tajikistan has lost more than 1,000 of its approximately 14,000 glaciers, a trend that exacerbates natural disasters like landslides and floods. The dust storms carry pollutants from deserts to high-altitude glaciers, altering their thermal properties and accelerating melting. This phenomenon, which has increased tenfold in recent years, impacts over 560,000 hectares of land in Tajikistan. The accelerated glacial melt not only threatens water resources for Central Asia but also creates socio-economic challenges.
