Craftsmanship on a thread: Puppet makers in Tajikistan
In Tajikistan, artisans are continuing the tradition of handcrafting puppets using fabric, paper, and various found materials, imbuing each creation with a unique narrative. Bobojon Sattorov, a professional puppet maker with over two decades of experience at the "Luhtak" Puppet Theater in Dushanbe, has crafted more than 500 puppets. His journey into puppetry began unexpectedly after initially aspiring to be a stage actor. Sattorov specializes in marionettes, hand puppets, and rod puppets, employing meticulous techniques like papier-mâché for heads and developing innovative methods for puppet eyes. His largest creation reached five meters in height, and he also crafts wooden horses and stilts for performances. Despite the demanding skill set required, including sewing, drawing, and design, the craft yields modest income, and few apprentices persist.
This story sheds light on the dedication and artistry involved in a traditional craft facing challenges of economic viability and succession.
