Greece has extended the deadline for property owners to clear their land and declare these actions, now set for June 22nd. The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, emphasized the critical need for intensified land clearing efforts ahead of a challenging summer fire season. This extension, recommended by scientists, provides a brief window following recent rains before the peak fire risk period. Kikilias highlighted that over 400,000 cleanings have been declared so far, compared to 730,000 last year, stressing the importance of reducing fuel load. He reiterated the penalties for non-compliance and urged citizens to fulfill their responsibility in protecting their property and neighbors. The minister underscored that cleared plots significantly impede fire spread, while uncleared ones allow fires to advance rapidly.
