Zeldzaam Vikingzwaard is na ruim 75 jaar te zien in Doetinchems museum
Een van de weinige Vikingzwaarden die in Nederland gevonden zijn, wordt vanaf vandaag in het Stadsmuseum Doetinchem tentoongesteld. De sabel dateert uit 855 na Christus en werd halverwege de vorige eeuw in de Oude IJssel gevonden. Volgens museumdirecteur Isabelle Bisseling zijn er in de wereld veel Vikingzwaarden gevonden, maar niet in Nederland. Hier zijn er slechts een paar ontdekt. Het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (RMO) in Leiden heeft een zwaard uit 1050-1150 in de collectie.
A rare Viking sword, dating back to 855 AD, is now on display at the Stadsmuseum Doetinchem. This saber, one of only a few discovered in the Netherlands, was found in the Oude IJssel river during dredging work in the 1950s. After its discovery, the sword was archived and has recently re-emerged for study. Experts treated the artifact to prevent further corrosion, revealing intricate brass details on the hilt. Museum director Isabelle Bisseling described the sword as a Viking's most prized possession, often given a name. Visitors are invited to suggest a name for this unique piece. The museum considers it a significant testament to Viking presence in the region.
The exhibition of this rare Viking artifact provides a tangible link to the region's historical past and offers a unique cultural experience.
