KSHDCL Revives Sandalwood Subsidy Scheme
Given the limited availability of raw material, only a section of artisans is likely to get the material in the first round.
The Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (KSHDCL) is reintroducing a sandalwood subsidy scheme for artisans after a six-year hiatus. This initiative aims to support craftsmen and encourage the traditional art of sandalwood carving. Under the revived scheme, artisans will receive sandalwood at a 50% subsidy. The market price for 1 kg of sandalwood is ₹16,000, but artisans will pay ₹8,000. KSHDCL has procured one tonne of sandalwood to restart the program, which was previously stalled due to raw material shortages. Initially, around 300 registered artisans will benefit, receiving 3 to 4 kg each. The corporation plans to extend the scheme to more artisans as funds and material availability permit. This revival is expected to boost the dwindling craft and support livelihoods.
This decision by KSHDCL aims to preserve a traditional craft and support artisans by making a valuable raw material more accessible.
