The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine has been reconnected to the power grid after a prolonged outage. The plant lost power for nearly three days due to an attack on an electrical substation, which severed a backup power line. This marks the nineteenth time since the conflict began that the facility has been disconnected from electricity. During the outage, the plant relied on diesel generators to cool its six shutdown reactors. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) facilitated a localized ceasefire, enabling repairs. This incident highlights the ongoing risks to nuclear safety in the region.
The reconnection of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant to the grid is crucial for preventing a potential nuclear disaster amidst ongoing hostilities.
