Lidice memorial needs repair, lacks funds
The memorial in Lidice requires significant restoration work, but funding is insufficient. The central monument features a sculpture of children murdered by Nazis during the Lidice massacre. Over time, weather damage has severely degraded the statues, diminishing their original appearance. Extensive professional restoration is needed to preserve these figures. Jiří Pitín, a survivor whose family was killed, expressed the growing emotional weight of his loss as he ages. The memorial, completed in 2000, commemorates 82 Lidice children. The director of the Lidice Memorial, Eduard Stehlík, noted that the statues, intended to have a uniform brown patina, now show varied colors and metal oxidation. While no parts have fallen off, the condition is described as very poor. A restoration project is in place, estimating a cost of 13 million Czech koruna. A public collection raised 5 million koruna, leaving a substantial deficit. The plan involves dismantling and transporting the sculptures for repair to prevent them from becoming a disgrace.
This news is important as it highlights the urgent need for preservation of a significant historical memorial commemorating a tragic event, and the challenges faced in securing adequate funding for its restoration.
