Choosing Leaders Wisely: An Islamic Perspective on Voting

The Malaysian democratic system grants citizens the right to choose their leaders through voting, which holds significant religious weight for Muslims. Dr. Muhammad Firdaus Abdul Manaf from UiTM Negeri Sembilan explained that in Islam, politics and religion are intertwined, citing Quranic verses emphasizing obedience to leaders. He stressed that selecting just and capable leaders is a religious obligation essential for maintaining societal stability and upholding Islamic principles. The process of choosing leaders is linked to the core objectives of Sharia, including the protection of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property. Entrusting leadership is a heavy responsibility that must be given to the qualified, as neglecting this can lead to systemic corruption. The Prophet Muhammad warned against entrusting leadership to the unqualified, predicting ruin as a consequence. Therefore, in modern terms, voting is considered a form of testimony (syahadah) for Muslims.
