French Language Kept Alive in Tajikistan Rural School

For over 35 years, Mukim Nazirov, a teacher from a remote village in Tajikistan, single-handedly preserved the French language in his local school. Despite French becoming a rarity even in larger Tajik cities, Nazirov's dedication ensured its presence in the village of Orzu. His students achieved success in regional and national olympiads, though these achievements are now years past. The program was eventually phased out due to a lack of teachers and the increasing popularity of English, which is now prioritized for university admissions. Nazirov even developed his own French language tests and submitted them to the Ministry of Education, hoping to integrate them into the national testing system, but has received no response. Compounding the challenges, textbooks for French have not been reprinted since 2009, forcing Nazirov to personally source materials during his trips to larger cities. He laments the decline of French, emphasizing its cultural significance as the language of literary giants like Voltaire and Hugo, while acknowledging the practical advantages of English for international opportunities.
