Sydney's Oldest Bowling Club Closes Doors

Sydney's Balmain Bowling Club, the state's oldest such venue established in 1880, has ceased operations due to significant financial losses. The club, owned by St Johns Park Bowling Club, faced mounting costs and declining revenue, making its continued operation unsustainable. The net operating loss for 2024-25 more than doubled from the previous year, reaching $669,260. This closure occurs shortly after plans for a $4.43 million redevelopment, which included converting one green into an entertainment precinct, were approved. Club directors hope the redevelopment might attract a new tenant to ensure bowling's future at the site.
