A total of 15,281 students participated in the 2026 National Common Entrance Examination for admission into Federal and State Technical Colleges across Nigeria. This figure represents a significant decrease compared to the 29,260 students who took the exam in the previous year. The Registrar of the National Business and Technical Examination Board, Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, cited subject consolidation and college capacity as reasons for the lower turnout. Zamfara State had the fewest applicants with 14, while Enugu State recorded the highest number at 1,506. The examination was held in 203 centers nationwide, with results expected within 21 days. President Bola Tinubu's administration has been promoting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) through incentives like free tuition and stipends.
The decline in enrollment for technical colleges may indicate shifting educational priorities or awareness of available incentives for TVET.
