Central Asian Migrant Women in Turkey: Between Hope and Danger
Tens of thousands of women from Central Asia travel to Turkey seeking employment opportunities. However, stricter migration regulations and a lack of legal status often push them into isolated domestic work, leaving them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Their disappearances, exploitation, and deaths point to a crisis that largely goes unnoticed outside their communities. Recently, the decapitated bodies of two Uzbek citizens were discovered in Istanbul, sparking protests and highlighting the systemic insecurity faced by migrant women. Activists are calling for greater protection, as violence against women in Turkey continues to rise, with hundreds killed or dying under suspicious circumstances annually. The shift in migration patterns towards Turkey, driven by visa policies and cultural ties, has been complicated by recent crackdowns on illegal employment, leaving many women without legal recourse.
The plight of Central Asian migrant women in Turkey underscores the dangers of irregular migration and the urgent need for better legal protections and societal awareness regarding exploitation.
