GLP-1 Drugs May Reduce Cancer Risk, Study Suggests
A collection of over forty studies presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology last month all point to a potential medical miracle: that GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy appear to be protecting patients against cancer . While most of the cancer-preventing benefits seem to come from the drugs reducing obesity — a risk factor for over a dozen forms of cancer — the findings also suggested that the drugs have anti-inflammatory effects that can stymy cancer developme
Recent research presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology indicates that GLP-1 drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, may help prevent cancer. These drugs are linked to lower obesity rates, a known risk factor for multiple cancers, and may also have anti-inflammatory properties that hinder cancer growth. A study of 110,000 women found a 30% lower risk of breast cancer among GLP-1 users. Another study showed that breast cancer patients taking these drugs had a lower risk of death and recurrence. A large study of 10,000 early-stage cancer patients found reduced cancer risk in six out of seven types, including lung, breast, liver, and colorectal cancers. GLP-1 users were also less likely to experience cancer progression in four solid tumor types. However, the studies are observational and do not prove causation. Experts suggest further research is needed to determine if the drugs have direct cancer-fighting properties or if their benefits stem from weight loss. While the findings are promising, doctors caution against using GLP-1s as a cancer treatment yet.
These findings could significantly impact public health by offering new strategies for cancer prevention and treatment.
