Readers’ wildlife photos
Again we have the last batch of wildlife photos on hand. Send yours in, please! Today’s group of photos come from reader Ephraim Heller; it’s the second part of a two-part series (part 1 is here ). Ephraim’s text is indented, and you can enlarge his photos by clicking on them. Little St. Simons Island is an 11,000-acre barrier island on the coast of Georgia. Much of it is salt marsh, with a few islands in freshwater ponds for wading bird rookeries. I was lucky to spend a week
A reader shared a collection of wildlife photographs taken on Little St. Simons Island in Georgia. The photos capture various species, including an American alligator, oystercatchers, royal terns, and boat-tailed grackles. The oystercatchers were observed feeding on mussels and oysters using unique techniques. Strong winds affected the environment but had less impact on the birds. The reader also noted the mating behavior of boat-tailed grackles, which differs from typical patterns. Other species like the common gallinule and red-bellied woodpecker were also featured. The woodpeckers' tree cavities serve as nests for other animals. Garter snakes were observed, highlighting their live birth process.
The photos provide insight into diverse wildlife behaviors and ecosystems in a protected coastal area.
