The Federal University of Amapá (Unifap) is preserving over 50 years of historical documents from Icomi, a company that once mined manganese in Serra do Navio. This extensive collection, donated and transported in 12 trucks, offers a detailed look into how the mining operation influenced the state's economy and social fabric. Previously stored in Vila Amazonas, Santana, the archives include medical records, accounting registers, and employee files, spanning from the company's early days to its final years. Researchers are actively organizing and digitizing these materials, which have already proven vital in helping former employees secure their pensions. The university views this collection not as a "dead archive" but as a living resource that illuminates Amapá's past and informs its future direction. The Center for Memories at Unifap, supported by public and private entities, aims to make these documents publicly accessible and useful for research and historical understanding.
