Gauteng traffic chief suspended over cocaine case

Gauteng traffic chief Samuel Mashaba has been suspended following allegations of involvement in a major cocaine bust. The suspension is precautionary while a formal disciplinary process is underway. Mashaba was testifying at the Madlanga Commission about his role in the 2021 Aeroton drug bust. He is accused of posing as a Crime Intelligence officer to intercept a container with 715kg of cocaine worth R300 million. Mashaba, who had no authority for narcotics seizures, is linked to an informant involved in drug trafficking. He admitted to receiving R50,000 from the informant, which he called a 'side hustle.' The government states his actions may violate public service codes and laws. Mashaba has been ordered to surrender all government-issued equipment and is restricted from government premises. The government emphasizes its commitment to ethical public service.
