ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR has reported that 7.6 per cent of children aged between five and 17 are engaged in work, with most involved in child labour and hazardous activities, according to new data released during the commemoration of the World Day Against Child Labour on June 12. The government is enhancing efforts through policy changes, awareness campaigns, and stricter enforcement. A new National Action Plan for 2026–2032 is being developed with input from stakeholders. A hotline has been set up to report child labor cases, receiving 15 complaints so far. Seven individuals were penalized for employing children illegally. Inspections were conducted at 20 fishing sites to address child labor in the sector. Public awareness campaigns have been expanded with radio and TV programs, and billboards have been placed in key areas. The government plans to extend these efforts to Pemba. The Malindi Port Child Labour Desk recorded 2,340 children arriving under suspicious circumstances.
