Zimbabwe Launches Initiative to Re-Enroll 40,000 Dropout Students
[New Zimbabwe] Government has rolled out a programme to locate and return to class thousands of pupils who abandoned school last year, after data showed almost 40,000 learners exited the education system due to various hardships.
Zimbabwe's government has initiated a program to locate and re-enroll students who left school in 2025, with over 39,736 learners dropping out. The main reasons cited include poverty, early marriage, pregnancy, and child labor. At the primary level, 116 students left due to marriage and 102 due to pregnancy. The Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) report highlights the need for intervention. The ministry is implementing an Early Warning System to identify at-risk students and provide support. School-based teams conduct home visits to address barriers and create support plans. Government programs like BEAM and School Feeding aim to assist vulnerable students. Counseling services are expanding to address issues like gender-based violence. The Re-Entry Policy allows pregnant students to return to school after childbirth. Inclusive education initiatives are being strengthened for students with disabilities. Satellite schools are being built to reduce travel distances in remote areas.
This initiative aims to address the significant educational loss and promote equitable access to education for all students.
