A recent study by William Russell has ranked Iceland as the most welcoming country for newcomers in 2026. The research evaluated countries based on factors like migrant population, employment rates, visa policies, and expatriate experiences. Iceland achieved a welcoming score of 8.94 out of 10, with 25.1% of its population being migrants and an 84.2% employment rate for foreign-born residents. Luxembourg and New Zealand were second and third, respectively. The study emphasized that visa accessibility alone does not ensure successful integration. Countries with high visa openness sometimes ranked lower due to weaker social or employment conditions. Zurich was named the friendliest city in the study. William Cooper from William Russell noted that expats often overlook the challenges of the initial months, such as healthcare and income stability.
The findings highlight the importance of considering more than just visa policies when choosing a new home.
