Daladala Operators Face Deadline for BRT Phase II
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) has issued a one-week ultimatum to daladala operators to stop picking up and dropping off passengers at undesignated points within the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Phase II infrastructure, which runs from Mbagala to Kariakoo and Kivukoni. The directive comes just days before the rapid transit buses, which have been operating on a trial basis, officially commence full commercial operations on July 1 this year. Speaking
The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) has given daladala operators a one-week deadline to stop picking up and dropping off passengers at unauthorized locations within the BRT Phase II network. The BRT system, stretching from Mbagala to Kariakoo and Kivukoni, is set to begin full operations on July 1. LATRA's Director General, Habibu Suluo, highlighted that the current challenges stem from daladala operations conflicting with the BRT routes. Only 25% of the 200 buses invested by Mofat Company Limited are currently in service, leading to inefficiencies. Suluo emphasized that daladala must drop passengers at designated BRT stations without stopping along the route. Strict actions will be taken against those who ignore the directive to protect the investment and ensure efficient transport. The government is working with stakeholders to improve the public transport system and attract more investors. DART's CEO, Said Tunda, stated efforts are ongoing to reduce overlaps and benefit both investors and daladala operators. Mofat Company Limited's Managing Director, Mohamed Kassim, noted that the low number of operational buses limits job opportunities. If all 200 buses were active, the company could employ up to 1,300 people.
This development is significant as it aims to improve public transport efficiency and ensure the success of the BRT system in Dar es Salaam.
