The Tanzanian government has completed upgrades to the aircraft maintenance facilities at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), aiming to boost the country's aviation sector. The project, carried out by Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), cost 2bn/- and allows the facility to service up to five aircraft at once. Improvements included better hangars, lighting, and training equipment for engineers. Deputy Minister for Transport David Kihenzile highlighted that the facility will support 16 ATCL aircraft and others, reducing reliance on foreign services. The upgrades are expected to cut foreign currency use and create local jobs. The maintenance hangar handled between five and six aircraft in the 2024/25 financial year. ATCL is also investing in training to improve skills within the sector. Additionally, the government is renovating 38 staff houses to address housing issues for employees. The project, valued at 5bn/-, is 77% complete and will finish next year. These developments align with the government's goal to modernize aviation and improve working conditions.
The upgrades aim to strengthen Tanzania's aviation sector by reducing foreign dependency and improving local maintenance capabilities.
