A Zimbabwean man's legal challenge to overturn a ban imposed by South Africa's Home Affairs department has been rejected by the Western Cape High Court. Fidel Isheanesu Mugunzva, 40, had entered South Africa in 2011 on a visitor's visa and later sought immigration advice from an agent named Wendy. During their interaction, Wendy inquired about his family and suggested that his mother might have applied for an amnesty program. In 2012, Wendy informed Mugunzva that he had a permanent resident permit, which he purchased for R12,000. He used the permit for eight years, during which he traveled, opened bank accounts, and worked at Sanlam. However, the permit was later found to be fraudulent, leading to his designation as a prohibited person. The court denied his request to extend the review period for the decision. Mugunzva's case highlights the risks of relying on unauthorized immigration advice.
The case underscores the dangers of engaging with unverified immigration agents and the consequences of fraudulent documents in South Africa.
