Zanzibar plans Mangapwani free port to boost trade

Zanzibar is planning to build an integrated seaport in Mangapwani and declare it a free port to reestablish its role as a regional trade center. The initiative was announced by Acting Trade and Industrial Development Minister Shariff Ali Shariff during a session in the House of Representatives. Legislators from ACT-Wazalendo asked about efforts to revive Zanzibar's commercial significance. The new port is expected to enhance trade, attract investment, and improve access to global markets. Mangapwani's coastal location makes it ideal for expanding maritime trade. The government has previously established free economic zones, such as in Maruhubi. Local businesses are also being supported to produce high-quality goods. The plan includes training in branding and quality standards to improve competitiveness. These efforts aim to position Zanzibar as a key player in international trade.

This initiative could significantly boost Zanzibar's economic growth and regional influence by enhancing trade capabilities and attracting foreign investment.
