Mining Sector Faces New Challenges
DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S mining sector has reached a stage where small-scale mining can no longer be treated as a side issue. The sector is growing, its contribution to the economy is clear, and the Government has already made important policy and institutional reforms. But the real test is no longer whether the country understands the importance of small-scale miners. The real test is whether the country can turn recommendations into measurable results. Tanzania's mining industry has evolved to a point where small-scale mining can no longer be overlooked. The sector is expanding and contributing significantly to the economy, with the government implementing key policy changes. However, the real challenge lies in translating recommendations into tangible outcomes. A recent report highlights that while Tanzania has substantial mineral resources and an increasing number of licenses, the support for small-scale miners remains inadequate. In 2024, mining contributed 10.1% to the GDP, exceeding the target set for 2025. Small-scale miners account for 40% of the sector's revenue, making their role crucial for future growth. Over 52,000 primary licenses have been issued, but many remain underdeveloped due to lack of resources and support. A license alone is not enough to ensure productivity without proper funding, technology, and market access. The report serves as a call to action for more effective implementation of policies. Its credibility comes from extensive stakeholder engagement across various regions. The findings emphasize that small-scale mining is influenced by multiple factors, including geological conditions and local dynamics.
Addressing the challenges faced by small-scale miners is crucial for sustainable economic growth and equitable development in Tanzania.
