Folker Turk: 'Global Human Rights System in Deep Crisis'

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Folker Turk, stated that the international human rights protection system is facing one of the most challenging periods in recent years. He highlighted serious issues in human rights, with unprecedented attacks on international law causing severe human suffering. Turk presented a global report at the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, which runs from June 15 to July 7. Member states will discuss various human rights topics, including the impact of armed conflicts, discrimination, new technologies, and climate change. The Human Rights Council, comprising 47 member states, is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights globally. Turk noted that many major crises today involve serious violations of international humanitarian law. He welcomed the US-Iran ceasefire agreement and urged both sides to comply with its terms. He emphasized the devastating impact of the conflict on human rights, both in the Middle East and beyond. Turk expressed sympathy for Iranians caught between war and repression, citing increased crackdowns and executions following protests. He also addressed the situation in occupied Palestinian territories, noting ongoing challenges.
