Chi Technologies Inc., the parent company of Chimoney, has agreed to be acquired by CapitalSage Vantage Limited. The deal marks a surprising reversal for the Canada-based startup, which had announced its shutdown in May due to financial difficulties. The acquisition will make Chimoney CapitalSage's first payments entity in Canada. The decision to shut down came after the company struggled with scaling and customer acquisition despite offering a multi-currency payment solution. Revenue stalled, and the company raised less than $1 million in funding, leading to the cessation of new transactions. After the shutdown announcement, CapitalSage reached out, and the wind-down became the basis for the acquisition. Investors will be fully repaid, and employees will also benefit from the deal. Uchibeke will remain involved for six months to oversee the transition. The acquisition will be completed in phases to meet regulatory requirements. Uchibeke had preserved key licenses, which were critical to the deal's success. The acquisition allows CapitalSage to enter Canada's payments market without building its own regulatory framework.
The acquisition highlights the importance of regulatory licenses in fintech and provides a pathway for expansion into new markets.
