CHP's Future: Uzguzel on Party Split and Turkey's Democracy

Ilhan Uzguzel, a close associate of Ozgur Ozel, confirmed to TA NEA that Ozel, recently ousted as Republican People's Party (CHP) leader by a court, plans to form a new party. However, a significant internal struggle with Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who has legally reclaimed the party leadership, must precede this. Uzguzel anticipates a push for an extraordinary party congress within 45 days to elect new leadership. He also voiced concerns about Ozel's potential imprisonment, describing the situation as a "fall of democracy" in Turkey where "everyone is at risk." Uzguzel believes this trend poses a threat not only to Turkey but also to neighboring countries like Greece if Turkey becomes a fascist state. He recounted experiencing police violence firsthand when Kilicdaroglu attempted to enter the party headquarters with his supporters. Uzguzel stated that the party's two million members are rallying behind Ozel, not recognizing Kilicdaroglu as their leader, and that Kilicdaroglu's actions are benefiting the government.
