The Bank of Mozambique is calling for clear regulations governing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the national financial system to ensure security, transparency, and consumer protection. Governor Rogério Zandamela stated that while AI is transforming the financial sector and is integrated into the bank's strategy, its implementation must be accompanied by risk-mitigating regulatory mechanisms. He stressed the need for knowledge, cooperation, and responsibility, with the bank open to dialogue with various stakeholders. Zandamela also warned about risks associated with personal data misuse, cybersecurity threats, and automated decisions that could harm consumers. The bank has been developing digital transformation strategies and a dedicated AI task force since 2021, recently approving its AI Policy to guide safe, transparent, and responsible use of the technology.
The Bank of Mozambique's call for AI regulation highlights the growing importance of governing artificial intelligence in the financial sector to mitigate risks and protect consumers.
