Tajikistan's parliament has passed an amnesty law, as announced by the press service of the lower house, the Majlisi Namoyandogon. While specific details regarding the number of individuals who will benefit from the amnesty were not immediately provided, it is reportedly linked to the upcoming 35th anniversary of the country's state independence in September. The draft law was presented to the deputies by Prosecutor General Habibullo Vohidzoda. This marks the latest in a series of amnesties, with a previous general amnesty in 2021 affecting approximately 16,000 people. A more recent decree in March 2025 led to the release of 897 prisoners. As of January 2024, Tajikistan's correctional facilities held over 13,500 individuals.
The passage of an amnesty law is a significant legislative action that will impact a portion of the incarcerated population and is tied to national celebrations.
