Rond twintig grote natuurgebieden komen zones van 1 kilometer waarin veel minder stikstof mag worden uitgestoten. The Dutch cabinet is finalizing comprehensive plans to significantly reduce nitrogen emissions, including the establishment of one-kilometer zones around twenty major nature areas where emissions must be drastically lowered. For smaller nature areas, zones will extend up to 500 meters, potentially requiring farms within these areas to relocate, innovate, or cease operations. The plans also involve setting sector-specific emission ceilings, starting with the dairy sector, and implementing differentiated animal density norms based on land type. To persuade the public and judiciary, the government is considering a 'stick behind the door' enforcement mechanism. These measures aim to address the critical issue of nitrogen pollution impacting natural habitats.
