DODOMA : THE government has commissioned a 10.5bn/- electricity infrastructure project in Kongwa District, a move expected to strengthen power supply, spur industrial growth and attract new investments across Dodoma Region and neighbouring areas. The project, comprising a new Switching Station and a 20 MVA Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) transformer at Mbande, will improve electricity reliability for households, businesses and industries while supporting the region’s growing economic activities. The project is expected to benefit Kongwa, Chamwino, Gairo and parts of Mpwapwa districts, where increasing demand for electricity has put pressure on existing infrastructure. Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Dodoma today ,June 16,2026Minister for Energy Deo Ndejembi said the government, through the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO), had invested more than 10.5bn/- in the project, which also included the construction of a 92-kilometre, 33-kilovolt power line from Zuzu to Mbande. He said for many years residents of Kongwa relied on a single 33kV electricity line from Dodoma City, a situation that often resulted in unreliable power supply due to growing demand and technical challenges. “The completion of this infrastructure will significantly improve electricity services in Kongwa, Gairo, Chamwino and parts of Mpwapwa districts. It will strengthen the distribution network, reduce the impact of faults, improve voltage stability and enhance TANESCO’s capacity to meet current and future demand,” he said. Mr Ndejembi noted that reliable electricity is a critical driver of economic growth, adding that the project is expected to stimulate production activities, improve business operations, attract investments and enhance the delivery of social services in the beneficiary areas. The minister urged TANESCO to continue strengthening maintenance of power infrastructure to ensure that the substantial investments being made by the government deliver the intended benefits to citizens. He also called on the utility to continue implementing other strategic projects aimed at improving electricity access and reliability across the country. Mr Ndejembi further urged residents of Kongwa and neighbouring districts benefiting from the project to protect the infrastructure and make productive use of reliable electricity to boost income-generating activities and improve their livelihoods. For his part, TANESCO Managing Director Lazaro Twange said the project was developed following assessments that identified the need to strengthen power supply infrastructure in Kongwa and surrounding areas due to increasing economic and social activities. Mr Lazaro Twange He said the new Switching Station and AVR, with a capacity of 20 MVA, have been constructed specifically to improve the stability and reliability of electricity supply. “The completion of these facilities will reduce power disruptions, improve voltage quality and enable TANESCO to effectively serve both existing customers and future demand,” Mr Twange said. He added that the investment will create more opportunities for industrial development, business expansion, income-generating activities and improved social services that depend on reliable electricity. Mr Twange also said TANESCO is continuing with the implementation of the Chalinze-Dodoma transmission project, which will further strengthen the National Grid and enhance the delivery of electricity generated from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project to Dodoma and other parts of the country. “These projects demonstrate TANESCO’s commitment to continuously upgrading electricity infrastructure to match the pace of economic growth and the needs of Tanzanians,” he said. Representing industrialists in Kongwa District, Mr Nemes Ritte welcomed the project, saying unreliable power supply had previously affected industrial operations in the area. “We thank the government and TANESCO for successfully implementing this project. We are confident that the voltage challenges and power instability that affected our industries will now be significantly reduced,” he said.
