Czech Republic Faces Widespread Substance Abuse: Report Reveals 72% Use Addictive Substances
Téměř tři čtvrtiny lidí v Česku podle průzkumů užívají návykové látky. Denně či skoro denně kouří cigarety až 1,6 milionu osob nad patnáct let a pije alkohol až milion lidí.
A new report from the National Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Dependencies (NMS) indicates that a significant majority of the Czech population, approximately 72 percent, currently uses addictive substances. Daily or near-daily cigarette smoking affects up to 1.6 million people over 15, while alcohol consumption is prevalent among up to a million individuals. Furthermore, up to a million people struggle with the misuse of prescription drugs. The report also highlights a growing trend of individuals using multiple substances concurrently and an increase in those seeking treatment for alcohol and medication abuse. Despite these figures, the Czech Republic maintains a relatively low incidence of drug-related infections and deaths in a European context due to harm reduction strategies. However, the capacity of addiction services is noted as insufficient, leading to long waiting times for treatment. The government has been briefed on the findings of this annual report on dependencies.
The report highlights a significant public health challenge concerning widespread substance abuse in the Czech Republic, impacting a large portion of the population.
