Tall Trees Disrupt Weather Radar Accuracy in Gelderland, Netherlands
Residents in parts of Gelderland, Netherlands, are experiencing inaccurate weather forecasts due to tall trees interfering with the weather radar in Herwijnen. The KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) research indicates that the rapidly growing poplar trees are blocking radar pulses, leading to discrepancies in rainfall measurements. This issue particularly affects summer forecasts, which are critical for safety due to higher humidity and extreme weather risks. The KNMI requested the municipality of West Betuwe, owner of the trees, to prune them, but action has not yet been taken pending further reports. While backup data from Belgian and German radars helps fill the gap, local accuracy is compromised.
Interference from tall trees is compromising the accuracy of weather radar in Gelderland, affecting local forecasts and highlighting the need for timely infrastructure maintenance.
