McDonald's has won a legal battle to open a 24/7 takeaway restaurant in Northcote, a Melbourne suburb once recognized as a "world's coolest" street. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (Vcat) overturned the Darebin City Council's initial rejection of the fast-food giant's application. The tribunal ruled that the council could not deny the permit based on the argument that McDonald's would not fit the "vibe" of the area.

This decision sets a precedent for how local councils can assess fast-food chain applications against neighborhood character assessments.
