President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will depart for Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday to participate in a high-level conference focused on advancing global reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of Africans. The conference, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, will bring together heads of state, policymakers, scholars and stakeholders to discuss the next steps following the adoption of a landmark United Nations (UN) resolution recognising the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of Africans as crimes against humanity, a statement issued on Tuesday says. Hosted by Ghanaian president John Mahama in his capacity as the African Union champion for reparations, the gathering aims to formulate a global post-adoption framework to operationalise the UN resolution and provide a roadmap for reparatory justice, restitution and accountability. Namibia is expected to use the platform to contribute to international discussions on historical redress, drawing from its own experiences with colonial dispossession and the genocide committed against the Ovaherero and Nama communities between 1904 and 1908. “The president’s participation also comes as Namibia continues engagements with Germany on genocide negotiations and restorative justice initiatives,” reads the statement. Following the conference, Nandi-Ndaitwah will undertake a state visit to Tanzania from 20 to 21 June aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and reaffirming historical ties between the two countries. She is expected to hold talks with Tanzanian president Samia Hassan and oversee the signing of cooperation agreements in areas of mutual interest. The visit will include a tour of historical sites in the Kongwa district associated with Namibia’s liberation struggle, including locations that accommodated Namibian freedom fighters and founding president Sam Nujoma during exile. Nandi-Ndaitwah is expected back in Namibia on 22 June. The post President heads to Ghana, Tanzania for key diplomatic missions appeared first on The Namibian .
