CITIZENS Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator Caston Matewu was ejected from the National Assembly, Tuesday following a heated exchange during debate on the controversial Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Bill. Tempers flared in the House after Deputy Speaker Tsitsi Gezi abruptly stopped Matewu’s contribution, citing the exhaustion of his allocated debating time. The Marondera Central MP protested the ruling, accusing the chair of attempting to silence opposition voices against the proposed constitutional amendments. In a dramatic show of defiance, Matewu threw a copy of the Constitution onto the floor of the House before being ordered out. Before the disruption, Matewu had launched a fierce attack on the Constitutional Amendment Bill, describing it as a threat to Zimbabwe’s democratic foundations. “People from Marondera Central did not send me to this August House to witness the quiet burial of our democracy. I stand in absolute and unyielding opposition to Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3,” said Matewu. There is nowhere in the Bill where democracy is being killed,” said Ziyambi. The Constitutional Amendment Bill has generated intense debate in Parliament, with supporters arguing it seeks to improve governance structures, while critics contend it weakens democratic safeguards and accountability mechanisms. The Bill is expected to be put to a vote before the end of the week following two weeks of debate in the National Assembly.
