The Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has said Nigeria’s democracy which clocked 27 years last Friday was not perfect. The, however, added that the current democratic system remains far better than alternative form of governance. Soludo stated this when he spoke at the third anniversary of the Anambra State House of Assembly over the weekend. He added, “Nigeria’s 27-year-old democratic journey, has witnessed appreciable improvements in the electoral processes. Despite its imperfections, the current democratic system remains far better than alternative forms of governance and should be appreciated and strengthened. “I commend the legislature, it is one of the most productive in the state’s history. The passage of several consequential laws, prominent among them, the Local Government Administration Law, has strengthened grassroots governance, improved fiscal stability, and enabled the clearance of gratuity arrears owed to retirees as well as the Homeland Security Law, which has reinforced the state’s security architecture.” He disclosed that approval has been secured for the establishment of an Army Brigade in the state, with hundreds of soldiers expected to be deployed to further strengthen security operations across the state. He said, “Yesterday, I received a delegation from the Army that is working to set up a brigade. That has been approved and will be established. They will be building their barracks here, and hundreds, if not up to a thousand, soldiers will be here very soon. The Speaker, Somtochukwu Udeze, noted that the Eighth Assembly has recorded significant legislative achievements within three years, enacting 45 laws and considering over 90 motions aimed at strengthening governance and driving development in Anambra State.
