BOE Technology Group has officially commenced mass production of China's first — and one of the world's first — Gen 8.6 AMOLED production lines at its facility in the Chengdu Hi-tech Zone, marking a landmark achievement for China's display industry. The production line, which began mass production on June 17, fills a critical gap in China's high-generation AMOLED manufacturing capabilities. It is the world's first FMM-process line to support both flexible OLED and Hybrid OLED dual-technology processes, and is positioned as one of the fastest-ramping and most technologically mature mid-to-large-size high-end OLED production lines globally. Since breaking ground in March 2024, the project has proceeded at an extraordinary pace: structural topping-out in 183 days, process equipment installation four months ahead of schedule, and first product点亮 five months ahead of plan. The total investment stands at 63 billion RMB, making it the largest single industrial project in Southwest China. With a design capacity of 32,000 glass substrates per month (substrate size: 2290mm × 2620mm), the line primarily produces high-end OLED displays for IT applications including laptops and tablets. The production line incorporates advanced technologies including Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) backplane technology, enabling adaptive 1-240Hz refresh rates, and Tandem stacked light-emitting device architecture. The tandem structure vertically connects two emission layers in series, delivering significantly higher brightness while reducing power consumption by 20-30% and extending operational lifetime by 3-4 times compared to single-layer designs. These advances are expected to accelerate the adoption of OLED displays in mid-to-high-end laptops and tablets. BOE now operates four AMOLED production lines across the Sichuan-Chongqing region, having previously built three Gen 6 flexible AMOLED lines in Chengdu, Chongqing, and Mianyang. The company has cumulatively shipped over 600 million OLED display units. The Gen 8.6 line represents a critical strategic asset for China's display industry, which has been working to close the gap with South Korean leaders Samsung Display and LG Display in the premium OLED segment. By targeting the rapidly growing IT OLED market — where demand from laptops, tablets, and monitors is surging — BOE is positioning itself at the forefront of the next growth wave in display technology.
