ZANZIBAR: TWO new marine protected areas have been established in eastern Pemba as part of Zanzibar’s efforts to strengthen marine conservation and protect coastal ecosystems, the House of Representatives was told yesterday. Deputy Minister for Blue Economy and Fisheries, Ms Mboja Ramadhani Mshenga , said the government has intensified measures to safeguard ocean resources through expanded conservation programmes and improved management of marine environments. She made the remarks while responding to a question from Women’s Special Seats Representative, Ms Fatma Ramadhan Mohamed (CCM), who sought clarification on government strategies to preserve marine and coastal ecosystems. Ms Mshenga said existing conservation efforts include protected areas such as Tumbatu, Chumbe Marine Conservation Area (MCA) and Menai Bay Conservation Area (MIMCA), which are aimed at regulating resource use and protecting marine biodiversity. She said the areas are managed through participatory approaches involving Shehia Fishing Committees, which have established Collaborative Management Groups (CMGs) to oversee sustainable fishing practices and resource conservation. The deputy minister said the government has also developed and distributed environmental guidelines, including beach cleanliness standards, to improve management of coastal areas. Ms Mshenga noted that the ministry is finalising a Marine Spatial Plan that will guide sustainable use, development and conservation of marine resources. “Stakeholders play a key role in planning and implementing these initiatives, including fisheries and tourism development, coral reef restoration, mangrove planting, patrol operations and public awareness campaigns targeting resource users such as fishermen and tourists,” she said. She added that the initiatives form part of broader efforts to promote sustainable use of marine resources while supporting Zanzibar’s Blue Economy agenda.
