The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees has commended Governor Umo Eno for the payment of outstanding arrears owed to local government workers across the state. In a statement on Tuesday signed by the State President of NULGE, Comrade Anestina Iweh, the union describe the move as a clear demonstration of his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare. The union also expressed gratitude to the governor for facilitating the settlement of the long-standing obligations, which it said had brought relief to thousands of workers. “The successful payment of the outstanding arrears owed to local government workers is a significant demonstration of Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to the welfare of workers in Akwa Ibom State,” the statement read. The union also acknowledged the contributions of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Frank Archibong, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in the state and Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Uwemedimo Udo, as well as the 31 local government chairmen for their roles in ensuring the payment of the inherited arrears. According to the statement, the collaborative efforts of the state government and local government authorities were instrumental in clearing the outstanding obligations left by previous administrations. “NULGE sincerely appreciates the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the ALGON Chairman, and all the 31 local government chairmen for their collective efforts in ensuring the settlement of these outstanding obligations,” the statement said. The union added that the payment reflected the government’s understanding of the challenges faced by workers and its determination to improve their welfare and productivity.
