Father’s day, celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries, is more than an occasion for gifts and family gatherings. The most widely accepted account traces the day back to 1909, when an American woman named Sonora Dodd sought to honour her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own after his wife died during childbirth. After hearing a church sermon about Mother’s Day, Dodd believed fathers deserved similar recognition. She approached local religious leaders in Spokane, Washington, with the idea of establishing a day to celebrate fathers. Her proposal gained support, and on 19 June 1910, the first unofficial Father’s Day celebration is believed to have taken place. The observance gradually gained popularity across the US over the following decades. In 1966, president Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation designating the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. Six years later, president Richard Nixon signed it into law, making it an official national observance. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated in many parts of the world, including Namibia, where it also falls on the third Sunday of June. Beyond its historical origins, the day serves as a reminder of the important role fathers and father figures play in society. It recognises not only biological fathers, but also stepfathers, grandfathers, adoptive and foster fathers, guardians and mentors who provide care, guidance and support. For many families, Father’s Day is an opportunity to express gratitude for contributions that often go unnoticed. From providing emotional support and life lessons to making personal sacrifices for their families, fathers frequently work behind the scenes to help create stability and opportunity for their children. The observance also highlights the importance of positive male role models. As ideas around fatherhood continue to evolve, many people view the day as a chance to celebrate qualities such as compassion, responsibility, integrity and emotional openness. Research has consistently shown that engaged fathers can have a significant influence on a child’s development, confidence and well-being.
