A standoff in Sherwood Park, Durban, between police and Malawian nationals on Wednesday escalated as officers fired stun grenades and teargas amid frustration over delayed repatriation.

Violence erupted when police officers attempted to manage the growing number of people pushing toward a secured area.

The situation escalated when parts of the crowd became increasingly agitated and advanced aggressively toward the police line.

“We don’t want to go to the police stations; we don’t want to be verified. We do not have documentation, and we know we came to the country illegally, so they must just not waste time and take us back home,” one of the protesters told News24.

More than 8 000 Malawian nationals have been camped at Sherwood Park, appealing to wealthy members of their country to fund their return home.

From Babita Deokaran to Mpho Mafole, whistleblowers remain at the forefront of News24’s intensive investigative work.
