The Ministry of Works and Transport has dismissed claims circulating on social media that it is removing the recently installed speed humps on Windhoek’s Western Bypass. Ministry executive director Jonas Sheelongo told The Namibian on Wednesday that what members of the public are seeing is not the removal of the speed humps, but rather “ongoing installation of speed humps”. The speed humps were installed earlier this month along sections of the B1 Western Bypass as part of efforts aimed at reducing pedestrian-related accidents and fatalities. According to the Roads Authority, the project costs approximately N$704 000, covering the installation of the speed humps, road signs and transport-related expenses. The matter has been challenged in court by activist Michael Amushelelo, who represented himself in an urgent application before the Windhoek High Court last week. Amushelelo is seeking an order declaring the speed humps unlawful and compelling the government to remove them from the Western Bypass. The case remains pending until 30 June after hearing arguments from both Amushelelo and government representatives.
