The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has demanded a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the reported death of 11 patients at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Mysuru within a 24-hour period allegedly due to the absence of doctors.

SDPI State president Abdul Majeed, in a statement here, sought to highlight the seriousness of the matter that the relatives of patients had raised over treatment, medical facilities and hospital management.

Although the hospital’s management has issued a clarification, it remains the responsibility of the State government to address the matter and dispel the doubts that have arisen among the public, he added.

The relatives of the patients had complained about the situation at Jayadeva hospital in videos, which were shared on social media platforms.

Jayadeva hospital is a major tertiary-care institution that provides treatment to critically ill cardiac patients from Mysuru and four other districts.

“Preserving public confidence in the hospital is of utmost importance,” he said while urging the government to constitute a committee comprising medical experts, senior Health Department officials and independent specialists to conduct a thorough inquiry into the deaths and bring the facts to light.

The investigation should examine all aspects, including the medical conditions that led to the patients’ deaths, the treatment protocols followed, the availability of doctors and staff, and the status of emergency care facilities at the hospital. “If any negligence is found, appropriate legal action should be taken against those responsible,” Mr. Majeed said.

He further stated that in order to maintain public trust in the State’s healthcare system, the government should treat the matter seriously, conduct a transparent investigation and make the findings of the inquiry public.
