Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav has urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to institute State-level handloom awards in Andhra Pradesh to recognise and encourage the contribution of weavers and artisans who have been preserving the State’s rich handloom heritage.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister on Wednesday, Mr. Satya Kumar Yadav described the handloom tradition as a symbol of the State’s cultural identity, artistic excellence and generations-old craftsmanship.

He noted that renowned weaving clusters such as Dharmavaram, Uppada, Mangalagiri, Chirala, Pedana, Ponduru, Srikalahasti, Bobbili, Bhattiprolu and Madanapalle continue to sustain this legacy through the dedication and skill of thousands of artisans.

The Minister pointed out that while the Union government recognises outstanding contributions to the handloom sector through National Handloom Awards, several States have instituted State-level awards to honour local talent and promote excellence in traditional weaving.

Such initiatives, he said, have helped foster innovation, enhance the dignity of artisans and inspire younger generations to take up the profession.

Mr. Satya Kumar Yadav suggested that the State institute annual State-level handloom awards and present them on National Handloom Day, observed on August 7.

The awards, he said, would provide meaningful recognition to deserving weavers, designers and artisans across the State and strengthen their prospects for national-level honours and other welfare initiatives.

He enclosed a representation submitted by Padma Shri awardee Gajam Anjaiah and Jinka Ramanjaneyulu, proprietor of J.R. Silk Sarees, Dharmavaram, seeking the institution of State-level Handloom Awards in Andhra Pradesh.
